The concept of how direct index portfolios are constructed and delivered is changing. Direct indexing gained traction in the early 2000s as SMA “investment products,” and were generally only an option for large accounts due to the complexity involved in administration. Soon, advances in technology and lower fees created an environment in which technology platforms and quantitative-based construction approaches allowed for the construction and management of highly customized direct index and other forms of personalized portfolios.

This shift from pure investment product to technology solution is gaining ground, and sheer demand will require firms to offer customized portfolios to remain competitive – and necessitate the appropriate technology to operate these portfolios at scale. Going forward, it’s reasonable to speculate that direct indexing’s future will shift towards a technology-based solution with providers who can support delivering customized SMAs efficiently.
